Jaguar Type 01 interior revealed

Perhaps Jaguar’s message did not land clearly enough. Maybe attention was diverted by the Germans and Italians, or perhaps everyone was too occupied with living vivid and deleting ordinary. Either way, Jaguar is creating a striking new EV. Formerly known as the ‘Type 00’, it will actually carry the name ‘Type 01’, marking a new beginning for the historic British manufacturer. Today offers the first opportunity to peer inside.

Peer, then. Peer with every ounce of enthusiasm, as if furious armies of online commenters were watching. It has been a little while since Jaguar’s luxury electric car made anyone cross - perhaps they were busy deleting their comments - so it is time to wade back in.

A minimalist cabin centred on a spine

These Type 01 cabin renders suggest a luxurious, pared-back interior arranged around a ‘central spine’ that runs the full length of the car. Its upper surface has a brass-inspired finish, which also appears along the tops of the doors and incorporates Jaguar’s friendly little big-cat emblem.

Jaguar says this layout forms four distinct areas for four particularly brave passengers, each surrounded by an entirely fresh design language.

The driver, meanwhile, sits in a low, GT-like position. From there, they can reach the steering wheel, a digital display, several buttons on a rather smart central tablet-like unit, and a considerable amount of power. More on that shortly.

Jaguar describes the approach as ‘technology on demand’: features remain concealed until they are required. Dedicated cabin observers may have assumed this idea also applies to the rear-view mirror. It does not. Look more closely and it sits centrally at the base of the windscreen, “at the same height as the door mirrors, to help the driver focus”.

Materials, performance and the Type 01 reveal

There are “concealed compartments”, premium finishes influenced by “travertine stone and artisan textiles”, plus “unexpected moments of colour”. There may also be unexpected bursts of swearing, given that the driver has access to 1,000 electric horsies and a 0-62 mph time of 3.3 seconds - should such things appeal.

“Jaguar Type 01 is the first production car to follow our new creative philosophy,” said Jag boss Rawdon Glover. “Unmistakable from every angle, the interior is no different. With Type 01, we wanted every journey to be an occasion, from how it drives to how it looks and how it makes you feel.

“With a confidence-inspiring GT driving position, clean and sophisticated technology and dramatic styling, Type 01 has an interior like no other.”

Another prototype will make its debut in California this week, before the complete unveiling of the car - which you almost certainly were not worked up about - in New York on 6 October.
