New Mercedes-Benz GLA electric and hybrid revealed

Like its premium-brand rivals, Mercedes-Benz understands the appeal behind particular car purchases. “The all-new electric GLA is the first model in the Mercedes-Benz compact segment to feature the new iconic grille.”

Mercedes-Benz GLA design and dimensions

The new GLA, offered as both an electric vehicle and a hybrid, receives a grille previously associated with Mercedes-Benz’s larger, more luxurious models. It brings chrome detailing, animated micro-LED illumination, lit-up stars and a dose of high-end styling to the compact class.

That said, the GLA is no longer especially small. Mercedes has effectively put it on a higher-protein diet: compared with its predecessor, it is lower, longer and wider, with “muscular shoulders and flush-positioned wheels”.

Wheel sizes range from 46 cm to 51 cm, or 18 to 20 inches – 20-inch wheels on a compact car. Although its overall profile remains recognisable from the previous model, this latest version appears more tightly proportioned.

Electric Mercedes-Benz GLA powertrains

The electric range begins with the GLA 200, which combines a 58kWh battery with 222bhp. Above it sits the 268bhp GLA 250+, followed by the GLA 350 4Matic, producing just under 350bhp and capable of reaching 100km/h from rest in 5.4 seconds.

The latter two models use a larger 85kWh NMC battery. Mercedes has not specified which version achieves the maximum range, though the GLA 250+ is the likely candidate: one variant can cover up to 657km on one charge. Every electric GLA uses an 800V electrical architecture.

Mercedes says that a further electric version, fitted with a 71kWh battery, will join the line-up in 2027. A 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid GLA is also planned. It uses a “newly developed” four-cylinder engine, a 1.3kWh battery and a small electric motor, allowing it to operate on electric power alone. Front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions will be offered.

MBUX Superscreen and interior technology

As expected, every GLA includes a wide selection of driving modes – Eco, Comfort and Sport among them – which alter the usual steering, powertrain, suspension and braking settings. There is also extensive technology, including something called ‘artificial intelligence’ – wonder whether that will catch on – alongside numerous cameras, radar systems, sensors and driver-assistance features, plus a fully redesigned cabin.

Predictably, the interior centres on large displays. Buyers can choose the MBUX Superscreen, which stretches across the full dashboard width and comprises a 26cm driver display, a 36cm central touchscreen and a 36cm passenger display. Those who would rather prevent the front passenger from operating anything can have glass-effect trim in place of the passenger screen.

This display arrangement is powered by up-to-date chips, offers personalisation and accepts voice commands. Elsewhere, the previous circular outer air vents have become larger and now resemble jet turbines. There is also a new steering wheel, ambient lighting, an optional Burmester sound system, additional acoustic insulation and numerous trim packs intended to lighten your wallet while helping your GLA stand out.

UK pricing has not yet been announced. In Germany, however, the new GLA starts at €48,599 for the 200, €54,978 for the 250+, and €58,107.70 for the 350 4Matic.
